Coventry community contacts: council, libraries and local services

Who looks after what in Coventry - the city council, your ward councillors, regional services, libraries and where to get help.

Coventry City Council

Coventry City Council is a single, all-purpose council for the whole city. Unlike two-tier areas such as neighbouring Warwickshire, there is no separate district and county split: the city council handles bins and recycling, council tax, planning, roads, parking, schools admissions, social care, libraries, parks and licensing.

Its Council House on Earl Street is the civic home of the city, while everyday enquiries are best started online through the council's contact and report-it pages.

Bins, council tax and planning

Collection days depend on your street, so use the council's postcode search rather than a neighbour's guess. The same goes for garden waste, which is a separate subscription service. Council tax, planning applications and comments on local proposals are all handled through the council website.

Your ward councillors

Coventry is divided into wards, each represented by elected city councillors. They can help with local issues, take up casework and often hold surgeries. The council's councillor pages let you find who represents your street and how to contact them, and its elections pages explain how to register to vote.

Regional services

Some services are organised across the wider West Midlands. The West Midlands Combined Authority, led by the regional mayor, oversees areas such as transport investment and skills, and Transport for West Midlands runs regional travel information. Policing is provided by West Midlands Police.

Libraries, health and community groups

Coventry's libraries, run by the city council, offer book loans, computers and Wi-Fi, children's activities and community information. For health, register with a GP through the NHS service finder, and Healthwatch Coventry is the independent place to share views on local health and care services.

Community centres, faith groups, sports clubs and volunteer organisations across the neighbourhoods are listed in this directory under Community & Leisure. If you run a local group and would like it included, a free listing takes a few minutes and helps new residents find you.
